The modern LGBTQ+ rights movement was largely built on the courage of transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals. For decades, marginalized communities found strength in numbers, standing together against systemic oppression.
However, because society has historically punished anyone who deviates from rigid gender norms, homosexuals and transgender people have been forced into the same closets. The effeminate gay man and the closeted trans woman have historically shared the same social rejection, the same slurs, and the same police cells. This shared trauma created a cultural bond that transcends the theoretical differences.
