Released in Spain in 1983 under the rule of General Franco, Human Animals came from a wave of adults-only "S"-rated Spanish cinema. Its ultra-low budget is evident in its tiny cast (only three human actors and a dog), its use of stock footage for the apocalypse, and its reliance on a library music score. Despite its obscurity, the film somehow managed to get international distribution on VHS in the mid-1980s, popping up in Japan, West Germany, Australia, and even some of the more out-there mom-and-pop video stores in the United States.
