The story centers on (played by Mikey Madison), a young Uzbek-American stripper from the Russophone enclave of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn . Her life takes a dramatic turn when she meets and impulsively marries Vanya, the impetuous son of a wealthy Russian oligarch. However, the fairytale is threatened when the news reaches Russia, and the oligarch’s parents travel to New York to get the marriage annulled, leading to a chaotic and thrilling adventure.

While the film has received near-universal acclaim, some critics found its second act overlong or its story predictable. This divisive nature, however, has only fueled conversation and made it one of the most viewed and discussed independent films of the year.
