Shortening his name to Michael Bolton, he signed with Columbia Records. The albums Michael Bolton (1983) and Everybody's Crazy (1985) balanced the guitar-heavy AOR (Adult Oriented Rock) style of the era with a growing sensibility for pop hooks. Bolton formed the hard rock band Blackjack alongside guitarist Bruce Kulick (who later joined KISS).
